  1. The AOL Bulk Mailer

  3. The AOL Bulk Mailer is a simple AppleScript designed to send a single message and enclosure to a large number of addressees, using the America Online Mac 2.7 client.  Using it is simple, just follow the following steps:

  5. 1)  Generate a text address file with AOL and/or internet addresses, one address per line.  No blank lines, please.
  6.  
  7. 2)  Create a message file, with the text you want to appear in the body of your e-mail.  This should be a standard Mac text file.

  9. 3)  Log on with the AOL Mac 2.7 client, using the screen name that you want to appear as the sender of your mail.

  11. 4)  Double-click the AOL Bulk Mailer icon.  It will prompt you for the address file, the message file, and an enclosure.  (If you don't wish to enclose a file, just click cancel for that dialog.)  It will also ask you for a subject for your message.  The Bulk Mailer will send your message to each address on your list in BCC mode, so the recipients will not see each other's addresses.  (You, as the sender, will be able to see the addresses when you view the sent mail.)  Your message will be mailed in multiple groups of 25 addresses, so as not to overload the client.

This is a simple AppleScript, and cannot cope with all situations.  You are welcome to edit it with the SciptEditor that comes with your system software.  Two of the things you may want to alter most are right at the top:  the delay time to wait for enclosures to upload, and the number of addresses to add to one batch.

  18. AppleScript comes with System 7.  If the script won't run on your system, check the Extensions Manager Control Panel under the Apple menu and see if somebody's disabled AppleScript.

Messages sent with the Bulk Mailer are subject to the same terms of service as any other AOL E-mail.  In particular, unsolicited commercial e-mail can result in disciplinary action and/or legal procedings by AOL.  If you're not certain about the propriety of a particular message, please check with the TOS staff before inflicting it on 500 people!
